What is a Manager?

Intended for the manager who has been a “specialist” and is now faced with the objective of getting things done through others. Course includes an assessment instrument (DiSC). Attendees will be required to develop an IDP. Supplementary reading will be provided at the end of the course.

Legislative Awareness

All Managers need to know the “rules of the game” when it comes to managing employees. This course offers an overview of the most common pieces of employment legislation and what actions, statements, and behaviors to be avoided to minimize the risk of a lawsuit. Discussion of case studies is the primary “teaching tool” supplemented by a presentation, quizzes, a video, and brief , written descriptions of the major pieces of legislation.

Selection Interviewing

We all know that hiring the right people is critical to an organizations’ success. This course quantifies the cost of a hiring mistake. It also addresses the process that should be followed to ensure the identification of the best candidates. It stresses the need for a disciplined, structured interview anchored by behavioral questions. The course includes a quiz, a presentation, a video, and supplementary reading with numerous samples of interview questions.

Effective Delegation

Managers all know that they should use their assigned resources and help them develop. But, many managers, having been “experts” for much of their professional life, find it easier and a lot less frustrating to do all the work themselves. This course forces attendees to identify at least one responsibility that they can delegate and to whom, when they will do it, how it will be accomplished, and how they will follow up. The course includes a video and supplementary reading.

Communications

To be effective as a manager requires excellent communications skills (including listening). This course addresses the numerous obstacles to effective communications and the behaviors that contribute to them. Conflict Management

The issue is not how to avoid conflict but, rather, how to manage it. There are numerous approaches and techniques to explore to find the one that fits best in that particular situation. Team Building

Most of the time, 2 heads are better than one and 5 heads are even better than that. But to prove the point, this course uses one of the classic “survival” exercises as the best way to send the message. Only through collaboration and the use of all the knowledge and experience available can synergy be achieved. The “exercise” is the predominant teaching tool on this course but it is supplemented by a video, lively discussion, team competition, and additional reading materials.

Performance Feedback

Performance Appraisals/Evaluations have been an integral part of managing employee performance for centuries. Unfortunately, companies seem to think that the form and the process are the issues that need to be fixed., not the manager giving the feedback in the first place. This course describes the extensive research done on this subject, its findings, and how to design the system to optimize employee potential and professional development. Sexual Harassment

Everyone has read about all the court cases and the horror stories related to this topic. Unfortunately, many people are still not sure what Sexual Harassment is nor are they aware that some of their own behaviors – in certain situations – could lead to legal action. This course addresses the law and how best to deal with an issue when a charge of sexual harassment has been made.
