The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) sponsors and conducts vital research that provides evidence-based information on health care outcomes, quality, cost, use, and access. At the center of AHRQ’s research is the necessity for insightful and actionable data. In order to access such data, the agency must overcome data volume, variety, and velocity. As an example, AHRQ’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is the Nation’s largest collection of longitudinal hospital care data. While HCUP offers the opportunity for researchers, insurers, and policymakers to attain actionable insights, the data must first be compiled from disparate data sources in order for it to be used.

Over 30 years ago, Social & Scientific Systems (SSS) began their support of HCUP by developing evolving solutions relevant to evolving needs. Since 2000, in partnership with AHRQ, SSS developed HCUPnet, an interactive web-based query tool. HCUPnet enables the attainment of insightful and actionable data through identifying, tracking, analyzing, and comparing hospital care statistics at the national, regional, state, and county levels.

HCUPnet drives actionable change, providing researchers, insurers, and policymakers the data they need to enable better, patientcentric health outcomes. At the intersection of data and technology, HCUPnet is a model for attaining useful and salient data.
