What to Watch in Washington (January 2025)

Since our last column on “What to Watch,” much has changed. The 119th Congress is now in place with some new leaders, committee chairs, ranking members, and priorities. Republicans hold slim majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, although the Senate still requires 60 votes for most legislation (and there are just 53 Republican Senators). By the time you read this, President Trump will have been inaugurated, and some of his cabinet nominations will have been confirmed by the Senate. Watch for hearings and votes on those nominees.

Big issues remain concerning Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) appropriations, the FY26 budget, reconciliation legislation on border funding and tax bills, and the debt ceiling. Congress can also reverse some regulations. All of these issues may, and likely will, affect government contractors. What do we know now on these issues? What will we watch for to learn more?
