October 19, 2023

Dr. Anthony Calomino, Space Nuclear Technology Portfolio Manager, NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate
Kari Bingen, Director, Aerospace Security Project and Senior Fellow, International Security Program, CSIS
William “Mac” McHenry, Senior Engagement Advisor to the Director, DIU
Moderator: Rich Aves, Executive Vice President of Defense & Intelligence, Parsons

The panel discussed space's increasing strategic importance across military, exploration, and commercial sectors, and how industry is compelled to adapt to growing demands from government and private entities. They explored key questions regarding the cutting-edge technologies vital for future military and civilian missions, the Intelligence Community's approach to space, and how the defense industry can effectively balance government and commercial requirements. Three significant issues took center stage in these discussions: first, the shift towards a larger number of smaller satellites across various mission areas; second, the emphasis on faster development and deployment cycles; and third, the broadening access to space by more nations and the increasing commercialization of space data and services, which now extend to foreign competitors. These considerations underscore the complex landscape of space's evolving role in the contemporary global arena.
