March 29, 2019
10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
PSC Office
4401 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203
*Members only*
You are invited to attend a roundtable discussion with Mike Mclendon and Forrest Shull for a survey of key issues confronting DoD and the defense industrial base community regarding software sustainment policy. The discussion will include an overview of a series of studies performed by the Software Engineering Institute (Carnegie Mellon University) for the office of the Secretary of Defense. The session will provide PSC members an overview of the DoD software sustainment landscape and insights on where relevant policies may be headed.
Mike McLendon
is an Associate Division Director at Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Software Engineering Institute. During his distinguished decades long career, Mr. McLendon has served in multiple senior positions within DoD, including in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research & Engineering and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Program Analysis & Evaluation. Mr. McLendon is an expert in DoD technology acquisition and sustainment.
Dr. Forrest Shull
is the Assistant Director for Empirical Research at Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Software Engineering Institute, where his role is to lead work with the U.S. Department of Defense, other government agencies, national labs, industry, and academic institutions to advance the use of empirically grounded information in software engineering, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. Currently, he is providing technical leadership to the DoD in support of important initiatives to improve software acquisition: He is a member of the core team and advisor to several programs that are piloting Agile software practices (as directed by 2018 NDAA Sections 873 and 874) as well as a member of the team supporting the Defense Innovation Board’s study on software acquisition practices (in response to 2018 NDAA Sec 872). He has been a lead researcher on projects for the DoD, NASA’s Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA), the NASA Safety Center, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the National Science Foundation, and commercial companies.
