PSC Welcomes Executive Order on Federal Chief Information Officers

May 17, 2018

Arlington, V.A. (May 17, 2018) — In response to President Trump’s May 15 signing of an Executive Order to enhance the effectiveness of Federal Agency Chief Information Officers (CIOs), the Professional Services Council (PSC) issued the following statement:

PSC welcomes the President’s executive order to strengthen the role of CIOs to be more strategic leaders within their agencies, which signals the administration’s continued commitment to bring more innovation into government, modernize federal IT systems, and help agencies leverage commercial technologies and best practices.

The federal government today has a tremendous opportunity to leverage American innovation and cutting-edge technologies to meet agency mission more effectively and at lower cost to taxpayers.

The executive order builds on the 2017 enactment of the Modernizing Government Technology Act (MGT Act) and the 2014 Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA), which are both aimed at empowering federal CIOs to play a more strategic leadership role within their agencies. Yet, PSC’s annual Federal CIO Survey reveals incomplete progress to fully realizing the FITARA goal of transforming the role of federal CIOs.

The executive order is an important step to enabling CIOs to act more strategically to harness technology to help agencies better accomplish their missions and drive spending efficiencies across the federal government.
